Week 9: Space Exam

The big question addressed in lab, and a description of what you did.

In lab, we discussed the geological clock and milestones of the Earth. We split into groups and split the time from when the Earth was first formed into 6 groups so we could do a deep dive on our time period. My group got the time period of 4.65 billion years ago to 3.5 billion years ago. We saw the formation of Earth, the first evidence of water and first evidence of carbon. Other groups included the snowball Earth, first land animals, first land plants, and other milestones. We put them on a timeline in the room and shared our time period with the class.

A description of what you learned in Thursday's lecture.

We had our Space exam in lecture on Thursday.

Answer questions about the weekly textbook reading:

- What did you learn? I learned just how recent humans are on the geological clock. If the history of the Earth was the whole day, we would appear at 11:59:40pm. It helped to put in perspective how new our life that we know now

- What was most helpful? The explanation of the snowball Earth and how the high albedo of the ice created the positive feedback loop. It's hard to understand how the Earth just suddenly became all ice, but reading the explanation helped me conceptualize how that happened.

- What do you need more information on? I would like more information on plate tectonics and to discuss this in lab more. We hardly touched on it and it was a bit confusing to read and not have a chance to discuss it as a group.

- What questions/concerns/comments do you have? None.
