Week 4: 5E Model

What did you learn this week?

This week, we learned the 5E Model of teaching. This model was developed by Bybee at BSCS. The 5E Model was created to help learn scientific concepts with understanding. It consists of 5 teaching phases, which all start with the letter E. The 5 phases are; engage, explore, explain, elaborate, and evaluate. We also learned about teachers' roles and how they can help students in this process. Students play an important role too and need to work with teachers to fully apply the 5E Model. Another thing we learned was how the fast plants grew to look only about 5 or 6 days when it has been a full week since we planted them.

Which parts did you find clear and which were confusing?

I found the new model to be pretty clear in theory. I understand each part and what it can look like for teachers to do in their lessons. I don't understand how the teachers create their lesson plans with this model. How do teachers make lessons with the 5E Model in mind?

What are new or remaining questions?

One new question I have is if teachers are using every "E" section in each lesson? If this isn't used in one lesson, is this model used throughout a unit? Can it be used for both?

  1. Hi Meredith, I too found this lesson to be very enlightening and clear to understand. I would also like to know how to make sure lessons utilize 5E. You ask some really great questions with your blog. I think 5E could be used for every lesson depending on the depth you are going with each lesson. Great post!

  2. Hi Meredith, I also thought this lesson was important to get to know. I think making a lesson plan wouldn't be much different you would just need to make sure all the different roles are met!
